2016 Sony World Photography Awards Open for Entries

The Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s biggest photography competition and its aim is to recognise and reward the best contemporary photography in the world. All images entered into the Sony World Photography Awards are seen by juries made of up leading experts from across the photographic industry. Winning and shortlisted photographers are given global exposure and recognition throughout the year.

The annual awards gala and ceremony takes place in London, welcoming an international attendance of industry leaders to celebrate the recognition of the best in contemporary photography and each year also pays tribute to one of our masters with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award. Supporting the celebration is an exhibition of the winners and shortlist, comprising of hundreds of photographs expertly curated inside the historic London landmark, Somerset House.

CATEGORIES

Free to enter, Photographers of all abilities are invited to submit work to any of the awards’ in following five competitions:

  • Professional – 15 categories for serious photographers. This time Professional categories are divided into two distinct groups: Documentary and Art.
  • Open – 10 categories ranging from action to travel, open to all. Photographers of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels are invited to enter the Open categories.
  • Youth – 3 categories, for photographers aged 12-19. The Youth Award recognises the next generation of talented young photographers.
  • Student Focus – for those studying photography
  • National Awards – Working across over 50 countries, looking to find the best single shot taken by a photographer from that country.
PRIZES

Prizes for this year’s competition include: the latest Sony digital imaging equipment; inclusion in the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London; inclusion in the 2016 awards’ book and $30,000 (USD) for the overall winners.
The 2015 Sony World Photography Awards attracted 173, 444 entries from 171 countries from across the world. The annual exhibition of the winning and shortlisted works at Somerset House, London, saw a record 33,394 visitors, making it the most successful year for the awards to date.
